Time to see what’s making news in the cloud.

The latest buzz is Facebook. So, what does Facebook’s IPO mean for users? Facebook has filed for its initial public offering (IPO), a move that is expected to raise it between US$5 billion and $10 billion. But it also means Facebook will come under greater public scrutiny, and it’s likely to face intense pressure from investors to keep growing its business each quarter.

Gartner analyst Ray Valdes believes Facebook might use its new capital to acquire larger companies than it has in the past. Facebook Could Buy Netflix, Mobile Assets, Leverage Big Data. Facebook’s $5 billion IPO will give the company the capital boost to expand into new services and make some larger acquisitions it might not want or be able to do while private, analysts agree. The company has spent $68 million on small acquisitions in 2011, acquiring companies such as Beluga, Snaptu, and Gowalla for engineering talent.

Cloud computing start-ups, here’s some good news. Microsoft and TechStars Team Up; Giving Away Free Cloud Services to Fledgling Startups. Microsoft and TechStars, a prominent startup accelerator which operates programs in Boulder (Colorado), Boston, New York, Seattle and Texas, just announced a new program in which high-potential startups could earn $60,000 worth of compute and storage Cloud Services on Windows Azure over a two-year period. The goal of the alliance is to not only help fledgling startups fast-track their businesses, but to get them using Microsoft’s cloud services.

Ahh yes, cloud security has been talked about over and over again. Security is often cited as a primary cause for concern when considering cloud deployments. To overcome these concerns, companies moving to public cloud services might look to some emerging standards for help. FedRAMP establishes a baseline of security requirements for government contractors interested in providing the federal government with cloud services. NIST has developed a roadmap and a reference document about cloud architecture covering interoperability and security. Providers who work with the federal government will need to beef up their security offerings to comply with these initiatives. Businesses that use these same providers will reap the benefits of this enhanced security.
